KNIFE DEFENCE

KNIFE DEFENCE

23/05/2022

The possibility of suffering any kind of attack is a huge concern nowadays. Adding into the mix the likelihood of the attacker being armed with a knife, or any kind of weapon, for that matter, and that concern and anxiety can double in intensity.

KB Fitness’ Self Defence classes in Central London offer a way for people to feel more confident to go through a worst-case scenario situation.

There is never any guarantee that anyone would survive a knife attack, but the martial arts school in Central London has been teaching ways to best deal with such attacks for over 20 years.

“There are two types of knife attacks,” explains Chief Instructor, Kelly (KB):

“One, where the knife is used as a threat; there is no intent to kill at this point. And two, where they are determined to stab or kill their victim.” There are several different ways an attack can happen: grab first, straight stab, slash, and so on. There is no way to predict, and no way to consider oneself fully prepared.

A knife attack will likely be frenzied, where the knife bounces back and forth, so there is always a risk of the victim being harmed, even if that was not the intent of the attacker. The goal of KB Self Defence classes is to teach ways to reduce damage, as we cannot eliminate them.

There are multiple schools of thought, but according to Fight Smart Training, when faced with a knife, there are different types of attacks. They claim that the following percentage of attacks apply:

40% Grab first | 25% Straight stab | 23% Overhead stab | 10% Slash | 2% Backhand slash

“The best course of action is to avoid the situation in the first place. That is what we are taught at KB Self Defence classes. The instructor always says ‘Don’t walk around with your headphones, as they will block your other senses. Be aware of the people around you. Choose a well-lit road to walk home at night." It is simple advice, but these are things that most people do without taking time to consider the consequences. KB Self Defence classes have been a real eye-opener for me,” says one of our newer KB Self Defence members.

Knife attacks are only one of a myriad of techniques KB Self Defence classes teach every Monday and Thursday in Central London. Do you know what to do if held against the wall? What if you were being choked from behind?

KB Fitness’ experienced and caring instructors will teach you these and so much more. Come be empowered with us.
