SPIRIT OF HUMILITY

SPIRIT OF HUMILITY

24/07/2023

This past June, KB Fitness had a momentous occasion – the KB Kickboxing grading of 3 Black standard students. This event signifies the embodiment of the values Chief Instructor Kelly KB holds dear: humility, respect, and personal growth. In a world where humility is often overshadowed by arrogance, it is wonderful to witness the transformative journey of these students, who exemplify the true spirit of the martial arts.

Over the years, KB Fitness has been privileged to observe 28 other KB Kickboxing students reach this significant milestone (28 KB Kickboxing Black Belts, with 8 of them both also reaching KB Kung Fu Black Sash) – only a fraction of the thousands we’ve taught. Each Black standard grader has displayed an unwavering commitment to their martial arts training, and a genuine humility that sets them apart from others. As we have just added a

new group of graduates to that esteemed list, let us reflect on the calibre of student who has paved the way before them.

These exceptional individuals, from diverse backgrounds and with varying skill levels, have demonstrated that humility is not a fleeting quality but an enduring trait that shapes KB Fitness’ martial arts community. They have shown that true mastery is not achieved through arrogance, but through a constant thirst for knowledge and an unwavering dedication not only to self-improvement, but to the nurturing of others.

Kelly KB said: “Throughout the years, I have witnessed remarkable transformations in my students. The journey towards a Black standard KB Kickboxing grading has tested their physical and mental limits, challenging them to overcome obstacles, push beyond their comfort zones, and embrace personal growth. It is during this transformative process that the value of humility becomes truly evident.”

How can humility aid those who wish to succeed in their martial arts journeys?

First and foremost, humility fosters a lifelong commitment to learning. By acknowledging their own limitations and being receptive to feedback, martial artists create an environment conducive to growth. Arrogance, on the other hand, blinds them to their weaknesses and impedes their progress. All of KB Fitness’ Black standard graders have consistently displayed an open mind, eagerly seeking opportunities to refine their martial arts techniques and expand their knowledge. Their humility has enabled them to absorb valuable lessons from their instructors and fellow students, constantly pushing themselves to reach new heights.

Secondly, humility leads to genuine respect and empathy towards others. In a martial arts community, respect is not merely earned through skill but through the understanding that every individual has their own unique journey. By embracing humility, KB Fitness’ students recognise the inherent value and contributions of others, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and camaraderie. Arrogance, on the other hand, breeds a divisive and ego-driven mindset that would erode the very fabric of such a nurturing community. Kelly comments: “My students have consistently upheld the principles of respect and kindness, inspiring those around them to do the same.”

Lastly, humility allows martial artists to maintain a balanced perspective on their achievements. The humble martial artist does not feel ‘better’ than any other student or think that they know it all. Humility reminds them that no matter how far they have come, there is always room for improvement. Arrogance can foster complacency and prevent one from reaching their full potential. By remaining humble, they keep their egos in check and continue to strive for personal growth and embrace the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Kelly shares: “Having had the opportunity to experience various martial arts schools throughout my own training journey, I have predominantly witnessed an atmosphere marred by arrogance and self-centeredness. However, I am grateful to say that my school bucks that trend, standing out as a rare and unique exception. Our students understand the true value of humility and have embraced it as an integral part of their martial arts training. In a world that often glorifies egotism, humility becomes a beacon of light, guiding us to recognise our own limitations, acknowledge the contributions of others, and maintain a sense of balance and perspective. My black standard KB Kickboxing and KB Kung Fu graders have truly internalised these lessons, consistently demonstrating an open mind, a willingness to learn from their peers, and a genuine respect for everyone within our martial arts community.”

On 11 June, Chief Instructor Kelly KB and KB Fitness members came together to celebrate our KB Kickboxing graders achievements and to reaffirm our commitment to the principles that have shaped our school.

We continue to embrace humility, respect, and personal growth on our own paths of self-discovery.
