NEW PATH

NEW PATH

01/06/2023

A fact well known to those who practise martial arts is “when you reach your destination, you find the start of a new path.”

Whether you are a Black Belt or complete beginner, the martial arts journey doesn’t end, there is always something to learn. The life of a martial artist is therefore anything but dull or stagnant. It is exciting from the first moment a person steps into the dojo seeking to learn martial arts from the sensei, and remains a stimulating experience, year after year.

Whilst certainly a fun workout, martial arts is so much more than just punching and kicking. The more you train, the more your mind absorbs the

lessons of discipline, resilience, persistence, dedication, patience, kindness and gratitude… and the more these things start to reflect in your life outside the dojo.

Neil, who is a long-standing member of KB Fitness, said: “No matter how many years you train, you can always learn something new, whether it’s a new technique in the lesson plan, a new way of thinking of things, or a way to motivate yourself when you’re struggling that comes from your instructor. You also learn from your fellow students, such as being inspired by someone who remains positive despite a setback, someone who is determined and persistent no matter what happens, or someone who’s fun to work with who inspires you with their joy in training. There’s always something new to learn.”

The world of martial arts is vast, and those who train for years accumulate an array of fighting ideas and techniques. Chief Instructor Kelly KB does an amazing job of sprinkling her wealth of knowledge throughout the weekly lesson plans, gradually imparting new theories and fighting tactics with KB members.

“The learning never stops. That's part of why the training is so addictive and keeps people hooked for years. You keep learning new things. I'll still get excited about some clever footwork or sparring trick Kelly shows us and I've been here a looong time. You also learn a lot about yourself in this process. You may well surprise yourself!” said Jess, who has been training KB Kickboxing and KB Kung Fu for 19 years.

As Jess said, in addition to learning about the martial arts, you learn a lot about yourself. You learn about your goals, your limitations, your strengths. You may well surprise yourself and find out that you are much stronger than you thought you were, that you can aim for and achieve much more than you thought you could.

It’s undeniable that whether your martial arts journey lasts only months, or for many years, the experience is unforgettable.
